Sleeping well can improve and even lower your blood-pressure. Here are some suggestions for getting a good night's replenishing, pressure-lowering sleep:
- Get enough sleep for your system and body. When you are rested and refreshed, you're better able to solve problems, avoid fatigue, mental tiredness, physical strain, and better cope with stress.
- If you have insomnia or find it difficult to falling asleep, try keeping a regular schedule. Going to bed and getting up at a regular time each day teaches your body what to expect.
- A soothing bedtime ritual such as taking a mild, warm bath (not too hot or cold - either extreme stimulates the heart, mind, system).
- Reading with a low light (40 watts or lower bulb) -- make sure it's easily within reach to turn off when you are drowsy.or eating a light snack helps many people relax.
- You might need to change pillows and even mattresses -- especially if you have allergies and if your mattress is old and worn out (and full of dust mites which can greatly affect breathing, contribute to stuffiness, even asthma, and thus greatly affect your sleeping).
- Make sure the room is cool and dark. Your body should naturally cool down at night; sleeping under warm covers in a cool room is more relaxing than sleeping under little or no covers in a hot room.
Important: If you have been told that you snore loudly or you wake up feeling tired after a full night's sleep or you are sleepy during the day, it may be worthwhile to learn more about sleep apnea. People with high blood-pressure are more likely to suffer from a condition called sleep apnea -- a potentially serious sleep disorder during which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. Apnea is Greek for "without breath." People with sleep apnea are at greater risk for other health problems, including heart attack and stroke.
Additionally, high blood pressure can also affect sexual pleasure zones -- another great reason to get a good night's sleep!

Q. Which is best for back pain--heat or ice?
A. Heat works well for pain that is associated with tense muscles and muscle spasms. Heat can be applied in a variety of fashions, including heating pads, hot packs, hot water bottles, hot moist towels, or a hot bath or shower. Heat increases blood flow to an area, so it should not be used over bruises, cuts, or injuries where increased blood flow could be harmful. Limit heat therapy to less than an hour, and do not use it if you have decreased sensation in the area. If heat does not relieve your pain, or increases pain, you can try applying ice to the area.
Ice, or cold, works for pain associated with inflammation, joint problems, or irritated nerves. Ice should never be applied directly to the skin, because it can damage tissue. Wrap ice in a towel before applying. Gel packs can also be frozen and used in place of ice. Cold compresses, such as ice, ice bags or cold packs, work by limiting blood flow to an area, so don't use cold compresses on an area that already has poor circulation. Limit the use of cold to 10 - 20 minutes. You can reapply once every one to two hours if needed.
Some health care providers recommend alternating heat and cold to get the most benefit. Alternating them at about 10 to 20 minute intervals is especially effective for acute pain. If your pain shows no signs of improvement or worsens after two to three days, check with your health care provider about other treatment options.
