Diabetes Dectection by a Single Molecule

More than 14 million Americans are living with diabetes...and type two diabetes accounts for about 90 to 95 percent of those cases. Now a new study finds a single molecule could help predict the disease.

"Type two diabetes is the most common form of diabetes," Dr. Barbara Kahn of Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, said.

And now a new study from Beth Israel Deaconness Medical Center finds elevated levels of a certain molecule could help predict type two diabetes.

"What the recent study shows is that this molecule, retinol biding protein 4, is elevated in insulin resistant people so that means people who are at risk for diabetes and people who have diabetes," Dr. Kahn said.

Dr. Kahn is the senior author of the study and says type two diabetes is an epidemic.

"Type two diabetes and even the sort of pre-diabetic conditions are associated with an increase risk of cardiovascular disease," Dr. Kahn said.

It's important to note that the study didn't just look at people who were obese. It also looked at the molecule levels in some healthy individuals.

"We saw it elevated in obese people with no diabetes, in obese diabetics and lean family members of people with diabetes. These lean family members have an increased risk but they don't have the disease," Dr. Kahn said.

Risk factors for type two diabetes can include older age, obesity, family history of diabetes and race and ethnicity.

The results of the study could potentially help researchers develop therapies to lower the molecule levels as well as identify the disease before its onset.

"It's very possible that we may be able to use measurements of the blood level of this molecule to predict who is particularly at risk for developing diabetes," Dr. Kahn said.

The study also found exercise lowered levels of the molecule and increased a person's sensitivity to insulin. This study is in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Routine dental visits can do more than preserve your smile.

They can provide an opportunity for the early detection of serious diseases like diabetes. Recent studies suggest that people with diabetes are more likely to have periodontal disease. And if you already are diabetic, periodontal disease can make controlling your diabetes more difficult. So now you have another good reason not to brush off regular trips to the dentist.
